Finding confidence and purpose through music at 60
An inspiring story of Lathika Mohan (Khyaal Community Member)
“My name is Lathika Mohan, and I am 60 years old. I was born and brought up in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Music runs in my family and has always been close to my heart. I completed my MA in Music from the Government Women’s College in my hometown.
In my younger days, I used to perform on stage quite often. But once I got married, I decided to take a break from public performances and focused completely on my family. I was blessed with two daughters, and my world revolved around them and my husband. Unfortunately, a few years ago, my husband passed away during the Covid pandemic. It was a sudden and painful loss. That time was the darkest phase of my life. Everything felt empty and lonely. But as they say, sometimes light finds you again, especially when you least expect it. For me, that light was music.

My elder daughter, who had grown up watching me sing, chose music as her own career. She became a professional playback singer and even started her own music band. Eventually, she convinced me to join her. I started enjoying singing again and getting back on track. It gave me hope and strength. It was my idea to do a music video with my daughter. The response was heartwarming. Gradually, we shot many videos together. Singing again and creating something beautiful gave me peace and a new purpose. One special moment was when I got the chance to do a photoshoot for a saree brand. At this age, stepping in front of the camera like that was a big step for me. It gave me a new sense of confidence. I felt alive again.
Another turning point in my life came when I joined Khyaal. It gave me comfort, a space to share, laugh, sing, and heal. I love their Tambola and Antakshari sessions. And the most beautiful part was that, I was invited to teach Carnatic music to fellow seniors! For the past 9 months, I have been conducting weekly music sessions on Khyaal, and the response has been overwhelming. So many seniors have joined in, eager to learn and enjoy music again. It fills my heart with happiness. Khyaal genuinely gave a new rhythm to my life, keeping me busy, active, and positive.
Other than music and Khyaal, my four adorable pets, a Shih Tzu, a French Mastiff, a Golden Retriever, and a Lab-Shih Tzu keep me on my toes all day. My days are filled with cuddles and joy! Now, I love doing independent concerts and music videos with my daughter. At 60, life has taken a beautiful turn. My heart is filled with gratitude and I am positively looking forward to the future.
One advice to all my fellow seniors is: Live life to the fullest.“ - Lathika Mohan (Khyaal Community Member)
