Finding joy and fulfilment through art post retirement
An inspiring story of Neena Mehta (Khyaal Community Member)
“I am Neena Mehta, from Delhi. I am 62 years old. I completed my B. Com. Honors from Delhi University in 1983. I also did one year Diploma in Textile Designing as I was very interested in drawing and painting. After completing B. Com., I started teaching in Karl Huber school, Delhi. I taught Maths and English in the beginning and later accounts to 11th and 12th. I gradually became the HOD of the commerce department. Along with it I also started taking accounts tuitions. I got married in 1986. I had my first son in 1987 and my second in 1992.
Painting has always been my passion. Although, I was busy juggling my job, tuitions, household and children, I used to devote little time to painting. I painted whenever I felt low. Along with it, I helped in the art projects of my children. I loved to recreate the artworks that I saw around me. Unlike today, where we can easily capture images on our phones, back then, I had to rely on memory or magazine pictures to create my paintings.I retired in 2022, but continued taking accountancy tuitions.
After retiring, I dedicated about 2 to 3 hours daily for painting. I also started offering drawing classes to children in my society. With my children away, this hobby has become my go to activity to engage myself and relax. I gift my paintings to friends and family. I have decorated the drawing room with my paintings.
I am particularly drawn to abstract art. I have painted various subjects, including a Buddha and a half-face representation of Shiva and Parvati. One of my favourite projects was a glass painting of a peacock, which included a mirror. It took several visits to the individual’s house who owned the original to understand how to recreate it, and she graciously helped me. I enjoy using acrylic colours because they provide a nice effect, especially on thicker Carter sheets rather than thin chart paper.
In 2021, I joined Khyaal, a decision that brought a new sense of fulfilment into my life. My journey with Khyaal has been wonderful. I actively post my artwork in the Khyaal painting group. I regularly attend yoga, tech, food stories and Tambola sessions. I won a gold coin recently. I also like to attend the art sessions which add to my knowledge and passion, making me feel even more connected to my artistic pursuits. I have even travelled to Nepal and Kashmir with Khyaal. This involvement keeps me engaged, and my children appreciate that I stay busy.
My art brings me immense joy and relaxation. I find my peace and solace in it. Painting and drawing not only fill my time but also offer a sense of fulfilment. Now, I want to turn my passion into a business. I am considering selling my paintings on Amazon and to friends and family. This way, my work will not only be appreciated but also serve as a source of income.
One advice to my fellow seniors is: be happy and enjoy this second innings of life. Embrace your passions and let them bring joy and fulfilment to your days.” - Neena Mehta (Khyaal Community Member)
