Making a meaningful impact through words at 60
An inspiring story of Rajesh Handa (Khyaal Community Member)
“My name is Rajesh Handa, and I am 60 years old, living in New Delhi. I completed my graduation from Delhi University in 1984. Shortly after, I worked with DCM Chemicals and finally started my career with Government of India by joining Delhi Development Authority (DDA) in 1986. I served DDA for around 35 years and finally took Voluntary Retirement from the post of Deputy Director in September, 2020.
From the very young age, I used to enjoy writing besides playing football. When I was in seventh standard, I participated in a school competition by writing an essay on “Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose” that won the First Prize. This achievement gave me a spark and motivated to write more often. I have fond memories of participating in various Hindi Competitions. I remained a prize-winner in numerous competitions held in inter-school, college, office etc. As I moved through different stages of life, my interest in literature further deepened and writing turned into my passion. Initially, I started writing Stories followed by articles and finally chosen Poems to express my thoughts. Over the time, many of my stories, articles and poems were published in various magazines, journals and newspapers.
Besides, my book titled “Nazaria” containing 75 Poems was published in the year 2016 which was a deeply fulfilling accomplishment for me. With time, I noticed a trend in people’s reading habits. Long stories were no longer appealed the audience. Accordingly, I started focusing on poetry and short messages that conveyed powerful ideas in fewer words. My poetry became a way for me to reach more and more readers quickly and leave a lasting impact. My themes in poetry and writing revolve around society's pressing issues and family dynamics. I covered topics preferably on relationship between parents and children, love, friendship and devotion. I believe writing is more than a pastime. In fact, it is my purpose, a medium through which I express my deepest thoughts, concerns and reflections. In 1981, I presented live programs on All India Radio's titled ‘Mehfil’ and ‘Man Bhawan’. Some of my poems were even broadcasted through All India Radio’s International Service Division.
After retirement, my passion for writing grew stronger. Realizing that people are more inclined toward visual media nowadays, I moved from publishing in newspapers to sharing my content on YouTube, WhatsApp and Facebook etc. I proudly have a fan following from across the globe of about 4000 people on my YouTube Channel.
My first video published on my YouTube channel was a poem titled ‘Betiyaan’, followed by another poem ‘Paigaam’ conveying message from parents to children. Both of these poems are very close to my heart. These poems reached a wide audience and received heartwarming responses from people. This connection strengthened over the years, and today I have a family of around four thousand subscribers across India and abroad who remain engaged with my poems, stories, and messages. There are around 300 videos available on my YouTube channel.
Proudly saying that by virtue of my writing skills, I have about 10,000 fans on WhatsApp from across the globe and they are well connected to me through my regular poems, thoughts etc.
I created a video on “Pension Commutation” which turned to be of great value for retired people. About 2 lakh people have seen this video on my channel and until now I have received countless calls from them seeking advice as to whether pension commutation should be opted or not. I manage my social media channels independently. I create, edit and narrate all my content myself. My voice has become a recognizable part of my identity and I value the genuine connection it has allowed me to establish with my audience.
Blogging has been another outlet for my thoughts. Though initially unfamiliar with the concept, I embraced it as a way to document my thoughts and experiences. It is a learning journey and I strive to maintain a presence across various platforms to reach a wider audience. I aim that my words should uplift and inspire others. It is through my poems that I got connected to Khyaal. Interestingly, one of my fans, whom I never met, introduced me to Khyaal and I grew fond of the Khyaal app. I start my day with attending Khyaal’s morning sessions. I enjoy their informative and fun sessions and being connected with the community. I also remained a FIDE rated Chess Player and participated in various National and International Chess Tournaments.
I am blessed with power of words and an impressive voice to deliver them. I have also undertaken anchoring of various social, cultural, sports, religious functions. I love photography, nature and enjoy visiting new places to explore mother earth, until now I have travelled about 24 countries and almost every part of India.
Throughout my journey, I learnt to value life’s simple joys and the power of genuine connection. I cherish every moment spent creating, sharing and nurturing skills, passion and desires. One advice, I would like to give my fellow seniors is nurture your hobbies and passions and embrace change. Staying adaptable and engaged will bring a sense of fulfilment and joy in life.” - Rajesh Handa (Khyaal Community Member)
Best of your poems that I adore are betiyan, Paigam but the one I liked the most is based on Maa & some others too in which I have appreciated your way of narration with mingling shocking words, soothing to the heart & sometimes poems based on National themes bringing tears in the eyes of emotional people like me.
